Symbolism & Meaning

Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America but perhaps most well known in Chinese history. The peony has been noted in ancient Chinese texts dating back to the mid-400’s B.C. and remains a very prominent and important part of Chinese history today. The Chinese consider the peony the ‘king of the flowers’ and it is said to represent ‘riches and honor’. In Victorian times the ‘Language of Flowers’ described the peony as a symbol of bashfulness because mischievous nymphs were said to hide in the petals of the peony. In Western culture the peony is celebrated as the 12th wedding anniversary flower and as a symbol of prosperity and a happy marriage.

Peonies Blooming

We wanted to show you how these beautiful peonies bloom over time. It is sometimes hard to believe that the tight buds that you receive can open up into such beautiful flowers! Here’s a look at the buds just before we harvested them from our field all the way through 120 hours or five days later:

Keep in mind that the life of a cut flower will vary based on a number of factors; these peonies were provided with plenty of filtered sunshine through a window to encourage the blooming process. The life of cut flowers can be longer or shorter based on lighting, temperature, handling, the water provided, etc.

Peony flowers are wonderful to use when creating a bridal bouqet or stunning centerpiece...or put a bunch in a vase for a gorgeous display!
