Have Weddings Gone Bananas? Watermelons? And Pineapples!?

Have Weddings Gone Bananas? Watermelons? And Pineapples!?

Is it just me or are fruit motifs popping up everywhere you look right now? Yesterday, in the period of one hour I saw a pineapple dress, a watermelon skirt and a banana cell phone case. I kid you not!

So, what’s the draw to all things fruit? Well for one they are fun, whimsical, and add a touch of playfulness and an ode to our youth. They also remind us of summer days, tropical locations and sweet summer desserts. And let’s be honest, the thought of an ice cold tropical drink (Hello, Pina Colada!) may have crossed my mind too. What’s not to love! They’re sweet, healthy, colorful, fun, and tasty! Okay, maybe the Pina Colada isn’t healthy, but the pineapple chunks in it… those are… ;-)

Working in the wedding business I just couldn’t help but wonder if this fruit trend was carrying over to the wedding industry. I wasn’t surprised to discover some on-point, trendy and fun ways these were being incorporated. Let’s start with these fun invites and save the date items all found on Etsy:

Of course these tasty pieces lend themselves well to edible wedding treats like this watermelon mint appetizer (upper left) with feta and cucumber that would be so refreshing for a summer wedding. Or try this sweet watermelon and goat cheese that looks oh so fresh and delicious (upper right), pineapple black bean tostadas (bottom left), or keep it simple and sweet with fresh cut watermelon on a stick! {Note: if you’re just hungry and want to try these recipes the links will take you straight to the recipe pages for step-by-step instructions! You can also print these out and pass them along to your wedding planner!}

As you might imagine the fruit motifs carry over especially well to dessert, whether you print the fruit emblem on the side of a traditional wedding cake, or incorporate it into a unique dessert or drink bar, the possibilities here are endless. Check out this pineapple themed beauty from The Cake Blog:

Not a cake fan? How about a Banana Split Sundae Bar at your wedding instead? This would also work well at a Bridal Shower or Engagement Party, Baby Shower or Birthday Party - I mean why limit something this fun and tasty to just your wedding! In fact, if you’re a huge banana split fan this could be a fun theme to carry over across all your events. Queen of the Banana Split Bar!? I could think of worse things to be associated with!

I think one of the funnest things about these fruit motifs though, is to see them in unexpected places like this giant bunch of gold dipped bananas at a tropical banana grove wedding:

Or this simple Pineapple and Seersucker wedding centerpiece, simple yet so complete all at the same time:

The whole wedding theme doesn’t need to revolve around the fruit motif, you can surprise your guests with a whimsical watermelon cake topper, or these fresh watermelon centerpieces and have you seen these watermelon keg tapping kits yet?

All this fruit talk has me craving some fresh, sweet, fruit, but before I go here are a few more pineapple wedding pieces to get your creative juices going… all with links of course in case you want to try any of these on your wedding day!

Okay, okay just one more because I can’t stop with the fruit… can you imagine the flower girls done up with these adorable pineapple hair ties! Maybe you could find matching ties for the ring bearers?

What do you think? Would you incorporate any of these fruit motifs into your wedding or special event?
