While tradition dictates a dressed-up night out on the town for Valentine’s date, staying in for Valentine’s can be a sensitive alternative to the hustle and bustle of restaurants on the biggest date night of the year. It’s an inexpensive alternative, wherein you prepare all of the romantic details that go into a date night affair. You pick the flowers; you pick the food; you pick how to sweep your partner off their feet. Best of all, there are no social boundaries in a quiet evening at home. You can be as over-the-top romantic as you like, and your partner can reciprocate. With these simple steps, your significant other will be blown away by the thought, time, and effort you put into creating an unforgettable stay-in Valentine’s date night.

1. Find a delicious, easy recipe you can have fun eating with your sweetheart.

The often overlooked detail in this step is the “easy” part. Valentine’s Day is meant to be a night of celebration, where you and your lover can enjoy one another uninterrupted by the rest of the world. If you’re stuck by the stove slaving over a difficult recipe, your Valentine will spend the evening looking at their phone and waiting for your undivided attention.

Pick something you can finish preparing (or cooking) before your significant other arrives. Fun recipes and finger foods, like an array of appetizers or fondue, make for exciting date night material. Even consider spicing up the dinner table with hors d'oeuvres made out of aphrodisiacs, like bananas, asparagus, oysters, strawberries, chocolate, salmon, honey, or pomegranates. Cut them up into bite-sized pieces and spread out with an assortment of dips and sauces...get really romantic, you can feed one another.

2. Set your table with a tablecloth.

To create a dramatic ambiance for your dinner, use a monochrome tablecloth that’s solid black or white in color. Make sure the tablecloth is large enough to drape evenly over the sides of the table. This will create a crisp, dynamic area in which to have your romantic evening alone.

If you do not own a large tablecloth, try improvising with pillows and placemats in a cozy corner of your home. Find matching pillows that are large enough to comfortably sit on, and place them on the ground facing each other. Between them, place two mats for food and drink. This will make for a sweet, sensual environment, where you can cuddle, tease, and play with your partner all throughout dinner.

3. Break out your fanciest set of dishes.

Don’t be afraid; Grandma would be glad to see you putting her antique china to good use! Fancier dishes, be they actual china, glass, crystal, or other, add an elegant aesthetic to your dinner. While it may seem over-the-top, this easy step adds a sense of grandeur to your dinner. It says to your sweetheart, “I want to make you feel absolutely spectacular tonight.” Even just a simple, affordable set from a thrift store can be a striking touch.

4. Decorate your set table with freeze dried rose petals and candles.

This is where you can get most creative in setting up the perfect Valentine’s Day dinner. For a classic and timeless look, set up as many candles as possible, both on the table and around the room for a sultry ambience. Try to have enough so that, when you turn the lights out, you’ll have a dramatic, luminous dinner by candlelight.

Between the plates, the silverware, and the candles, spread out an abundant amount of freeze dried rose petals to match the occasion. This will add tasteful color to your table set, as well as dazzle your sweetheart as soon as they walk inside. Have a fresh bottle of champagne, as well as clean champagne flutes, set out among the petals for a delightful Valentine’s toast.

5. Have a decadent dessert prepared and decorated with freeze dried rose petals.

A small piece of cake or pie makes for an exquisite ending to a Valentine’s Day dinner. When you go to slice the dessert, have some remaining freeze dried rose petals set to the side. Place your slices on plates, and just drop a few petals on top. It will be sweet, simple, and an absolutely unforgettable final touch to a splendid evening.
